Overview
This test measures acetaminophen (Tylenol) levels in the blood. It's typically ordered in emergency settings when acetaminophen overdose is suspected or to monitor therapeutic levels during treatment. Acetaminophen is metabolized by the liver; excessive levels can cause serious liver damage. The Rumack-Matthew nomogram is used to determine toxicity risk based on time since ingestion and blood level. This test is critical for overdose management and determining the need for antidote treatment (N-acetylcysteine).
