Why This Biomarker Matters

This ratio is a sensitive marker for liver cancer risk. In patients with liver disease, an elevated ratio can indicate early-stage cancer, enabling prompt treatment before advanced progression.

Overview

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein produced during fetal development and in certain liver conditions. This test measures the ratio of AFP-L3 (a specific form) to total AFP, which is particularly useful for detecting hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) and monitoring liver disease. Elevated AFP-L3 ratios are more specific for liver cancer than total AFP alone, making this test valuable for early cancer detection in patients with cirrhosis or chronic liver disease.
