Apolipoprotein E3
The presence or absence of the apolipoprotein E3 genetic variant.
Why This Biomarker Matters
ApoE genotyping reveals genetic factors affecting cholesterol metabolism and disease risk, informing personalized prevention strategies for heart disease and cognitive decline.
Overview
Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is a protein involved in cholesterol and lipid transport. This qualitative test detects whether you carry the E3 variant of the ApoE gene. ApoE has three common variants (E2, E3, E4), and your genetic combination influences cholesterol metabolism and disease risk. The E3 variant is considered neutral for most health outcomes. Testing helps assess genetic predisposition to cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's disease, particularly when E4 variants are present.
