Your ABO blood type is determined by specific proteins on the surface of your red blood cells. The four main groups are A, B, AB, and O, with an additional Rh factor (positive or negative). This is the most important blood type test for transfusions and organ transplants, as receiving incompatible blood can trigger a dangerous immune reaction. Knowing your ABO type is essential for emergency medical care and blood donation.
Rh (Rhesus) type is an inherited protein found on the surface of red blood cells. Your blood type includes both ABO type (A, B, AB, or O) and Rh status (positive or negative). Rh-positive means you have the Rh protein; Rh-negative means you lack it. During pregnancy, an Rh-negative mother carrying an Rh-positive baby may develop antibodies that attack fetal red blood cells in future pregnancies, causing hemolytic disease. Testing is essential for safe transfusions and pregnancy management.
