Androstenedione
Measures the level of androstenedione, an androgen hormone produced by adrenal glands.
Why This Biomarker Matters
Abnormal androstenedione levels indicate hormonal imbalances affecting fertility, metabolism, and secondary sexual characteristics that require diagnosis and treatment.
Overview
Androstenedione is an androgen (male hormone) produced by the adrenal glands and gonads. This test measures circulating androstenedione levels. Elevated levels may indicate polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), adrenal tumors, or adrenal hyperplasia. Low levels can suggest adrenal insufficiency. This test is commonly ordered in women with irregular periods, excess facial hair, or fertility issues, and in both sexes when adrenal disorders are suspected.
