Fibrin D-dimer
Detects D-dimer (fibrin breakdown products) in blood to assess CNS clotting and inflammation.
Why This Biomarker Matters
Elevated CSF D-dimer may indicate serious infections or inflammatory diseases of the brain and spinal cord, warranting urgent specialist evaluation and treatment.
Overview
D-dimer is a protein fragment released when blood clots break down (fibrinolysis). Testing D-dimer in blood is a key screening tool for thromboembolic events, particularly pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A negative D-dimer result effectively rules out acute thrombosis in low-to-moderate risk patients. Elevated D-dimer can also occur with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), recent surgery, trauma, infection, and malignancy. It is one of the most commonly ordered coagulation tests in emergency medicine.
