Overview
Homocystine is the oxidized dimer form of homocysteine, an amino acid involved in protein metabolism. This plasma-only test measures homocystine to assess cardiovascular risk and screen for homocysteine metabolism disorders. Elevated levels indicate increased risk for blood clots, heart disease, and stroke, and may reflect deficiencies in vitamins B12, B6, or folate, or genetic metabolic disorders.
